10 Tips to Prepare Your Nursery

Whether you are a first time parent or been around the block a few times, there is a lot that goes into preparing to bring your new baby home. Here are 10 tips to help you prepare your baby’s nursery before their arrival.

1. Every nursery needs furniture. A convertible crib that converts to a toddler bed, and even better to a full size bed is a great investment. We purchased a convertible crib for my son 10 years ago. My 7 year old was able to use the crib and then toddler bed. When she outgrew the toddler bed we purchased a full size mattress set and used the crib as her headboard for her full sized bed. This worked out great and cut down on the costs of purchasing additional furniture as they grew.

While a changing table is handy, it is not always necessary. I changed my babies on the floor most of the time. A good rocker is a must.

2. Purchase a car seat to fit a newborn baby. I didn’t like the bucket type infant carrier car seats, so we purchased a convertible car seat that lasted from 5lbs until 45lbs. A bucket seat may be more ideal for your family, since you can removed the seat from the car when your baby is sleeping.

3. A good sling or baby carrier is a great addition that will help you to soothe your baby hands free.

4. Stock up on diapers and wipes. For a newborn you need an average of 30 diapers per day those first few weeks. I am an avid cloth diaper user (My website www.preciouscoverings.com), however I understand that cloth diaper are not always convenient. When I used disposable diapers in a pinch I made to sure to grab a diaper brand, such as Seventh Generation, natural diapers and wipes.

5. Make sure your nursery is baby proof. While a newborn may not move much, they will grow quickly, so make sure that the nursery is ready for your baby as they grow. Outlets should be covered. Items out of reach of your baby’s grasp so they don’t pull them down. Small objects should be out of reach also.

6. Make sure to prepare your older children and pets for the baby’s arrival. Each child is different and may react differently. Older children can be big helpers, while younger children may be likely to get jealous of your attention on the new baby. With a little preparation you can avoid some of the issues that may arise.

7. Pick out a theme to decorate your nursery. You will spend a lot of time in this room so make sure that it’s something that you like 🙂

8. Stock up on baby clothes and toys. Watch for sales during your pregnancy to stock up on these items.

9. Not really for your nursery, but prepare some meals ahead of time to freeze to help make those first few weeks go smoother.

10. Switch over your cleaning products to all natural, safer products. I love Seventh Generation’s cleaning products.

Bringing a new baby into your family is a huge job, but so rewarding. Enjoy the time when they are babies, it goes by so quick. You can always catch up on sleep in a few years 🙂
